About

Profile Picture
My name is Matthias Bröcheler and I was a computer science PhD student at the University of Maryland, College Park under the guidance of V.S. Subrahmanian and Lise Getoor. My research focuses on the question of how to gain knowledge from the massive amounts of information available today. In particular, I am developing algorithms and index structures to efficiently answer complex queries over large information networks as well as formalisms to learn from and reason over such networks when faced with noise, incomplete information, ambiguity or other forms of uncertainty in the data. Hence, my research connects database theory with artificial intelligence and machine learning.

Beyond foundational research, I am strongly interested in technology driven innovation and entrepreneurship. As in the two companies that I have (co-) founded, I aim to utilize new technologies toward solving customer needs. Assessing the business value of novel technologies and converting such into usable products is an important aspect of bringing the benefits of cutting edge research to the public at large.

My best ideas come about when playing soccer, running, hiking in the woods, or engaging in other sport activities. I enjoy creative design, traveling, and thought provoking discussions about nearly anything.

This blog portrays my research addressing the general question of how to gain knowledge from massive amounts of information.

For more information, you can have a look at my brief biography, contact information, research interests, or list of publications.

Lastly, I would like to sincerely thank for and acknowledge the support of the German foundation “Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes” and the “Hamburger Stipendienprogramm”.
